Karwa Chauth - a ritual of fasting observed by married women seeking the longevity, well-being and prosperity of their husbands – was celebrated yesterday. It is popular amongst married women in the northern and western parts of India, especially, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. It is the most important and difficult fast observed by married women that begins before sunrise and ends after moon rise with no food or water taken after sunrise. The fast is broken once the moon is sighted and rituals of the day have been performed which include worshiping and offering water to the moon in the company of the husbands.

In the evening, women dress up in special clothes, usually a red or pink sari. But this time for a change I wore orange Anarkali suit. New brides often wear their bridal costume. All deck up in jewellery and wear 'mehndi' or henna patterns especially on the hands. Decorative 'bindis' on the forehead are a must for all women taking part in this celebration.

So I did fasting and hubby ji accompanied as well as he has done all these years, so fortunate to have such a loving husband. I applied mehndi myself a day before on my left hand and my neighbour auntyji’s daughter Areeba applied it on my right hand. I woke up early in the morning as per ritual and had my sargi. Then got ready in the evening and clicked so many pictures with my hubby and 4 year old son. I broke my fast and had dinner at 9:30 pm after the rituals. Although the official moon rise time was shortly after 8 pm, it was rather cloudy and raining which meant it was after a patient wait and a lot of prayers that the moon was sighted. So I will show through pictures how I prepared for and celebrated the day…
